    FAKENHAM

The first meeting at Fakenham took place in 1905 and racing ran for several years having only one meeting per year, that being Easter Monday.

Fakenham was chosen as a new venue by the West Norfolk Hunt to replace the course at East Winch ( near Kings Lynn ), as the Fakenham soil was much lighter thus providing better racing conditions if wet.

The course is  left-handed, almost square in shape being about a mile in circumferance.  The steeplechase course is situated to the outside of the hurdle course and consists of six fences including an open ditch.

The old grandstand was built in 1953 and is still in good condition, the new Prince of Wales stand ( pictured above ) was opened in 2002 by the Prince of Wales himself.  The course has received several royal visits over the years including the Queen Mother in 1981 and 2000.

In 1965, the Fakenham Racecourse Ltd company to be able to continue to qualify  for the Levy Board's support.  There were still only five meetings a year being held in 1965, but over the years this has been increased to 13.

In 2015, a new Owners and Trainers Bar was built and named after one of the much loved horses that graced the Fakenham track from 2001 to 2011.

COOL ROXY ( Pictured left ), won 11 races at Fakenham.

A new weighing room and chill out area for jockeys was also built around the same time to bring the facilities up to date.

Although the Fakenham Racecourse is not as easily reached as  other courses in East Anglia, it's well worth the effort.

There is always a very welcoming atmosphere at Fakenham and despite the numbers of runners in some meetings being on the low side, the track has a loyal band of supporters and even on bitterly cold days, there is always a healthy crowd.

No dress code or other petty rules, help to make Fakenham a popular venue and even dogs are allowed in most areas.

Racing starts on the very first day of each year and runs till Ladies Day on the last Sunday in May and then resumes in October to the end of the year.
