NEWMARKET
ROWLEY MILE : The Rowley Mile course was founded in 1667, although King Charles II was known to have attended races there much earlier.
Newmarket is known as the home of racing in England and has top of the range facilities.
The course has a 10 furlong straight with longer races having a starting point on another part of the track which is shared with the July Course.
Charles II was a very strong supporter of racing in Newmarket and did much to make the sport popular. His nickname of "OLD ROWLEY" was used to name the stadium and a statue of the king is situated behind the members stand.
The photo finish facilty was used there for the first time in 1949.
Racing stats in mid-April wIth the Craven Meeting and carries on the mid-May, when the July Course takes over. Racing reverts back to the Rowley Mile in September right up to the first saturday in November.
JULY COURSE FIXTURES
JULY COURSE : The July Course opened much later than the Rowley, in Victorian times.
Queen Victoria was another strong supporter of racing at Newmarket and the July Course became her favourite as the sun was always behind the stands at racetimes and didn't get in her eyes as can happen at the other course.
The JULY CUP was first run in 1876 and was won by Queen Victoria's " Springfield ".
The course has a testing one mile straight ( Bunbury Mile ) , as the ground has a number of undulations.
The course is used from early June to late August and each year a number of MUSIC NIGHTS are held which helps to attract the younger element.
Starting stalls were first used in the UK at the July Course in 1965
