HAYLEY JOSEPHINE
NICOLA HOLLIE
JOSEPHINE GORDON : Was the leading lady jockey in the UK. in 2017 .
After becoming Apprentice of the Year and Lady Jockey of the Year in 2016, she became only the second lady jockey to achieve over 100 winners in a calendar year ( 2017 ), following Hayley's feat in 2008 .
Josephine quotes : " Hayley was my idol when I was a kid and I'm so happy to emulate her and reach these goals I have set myself "
HAYLEY TURNER O.B.E. was the first woman to achieve a sustained day in day out successful career as a professional jockey and first woman to ride 100 U.K flat race winners in a calendar year, in 2008. Hayley made her debut at Southwell in March 2000 and to date she has ridden 780 winners and is likely to record more , despite retiring from full-time racing in August 2015.
In March 2009, she received a serious head injury whilst training a horse to use the starting stalls and was unable to ride for many months. Another serious injury followed at Doncaster in 2013 when her horse fell during a race throwing her off into the path of other horses. Hayley suffered back and pelvic injuies and had another long lay off that dented her confidence for some time.
Hayley's success has seen an enormus increase in the number of female apprentice jockeys riding in the UK, a good number of which will turn professional.
